Direct Access and Referrals

If you are considering physical therapy in Missouri, you have two ways to begin care. You may start through direct access physical therapy, or you may begin with a doctor’s prescription. Physical Therapy Direct supports both options and will help guide you through the process that fits your situation.

Direct Access Physical Therapy in Missouri

Missouri law allows patients to begin physical therapy without first seeing a physician. This is called direct access physical therapy.

What You Need

  • No doctor’s referral is required to schedule your first visit

  • You can contact our office directly by phone or online

  • A licensed physical therapist will perform a full evaluation at your first visit

Important Things to Know

  • Direct access allows you to start care sooner, often avoiding delays caused by additional appointments

  • Your physical therapist will assess your condition and determine whether physical therapy is appropriate

  • Missouri law allows direct access for a limited period of time or number of visits before a physician referral may be required

  • If a referral becomes necessary, we will communicate that clearly and help coordinate next steps

Direct access is ideal for many common concerns, including pain, stiffness, balance problems, strength loss, and mobility issues.

Starting Physical Therapy With a Doctor’s Prescription

If you already have a prescription or referral from a physician, you can begin physical therapy immediately.

What You Need

  • A written prescription or referral for physical therapy

  • The referral may come from a primary care provider, orthopedic physician, neurologist, or other qualified provider

  • We can work directly with your physician if additional documentation is needed

Having a prescription allows your therapist to continue care without interruption and may be required by certain insurance plans.

Insurance Considerations

While Missouri law allows direct access, some insurance plans still require a physician referral for coverage. This is especially important to understand before starting care.

  • Medicare does not require a referral to begin physical therapy

  • Some private insurance plans may require a prescription for reimbursement

  • Our team will help verify your benefits and explain what is required for your specific plan
